Heading Home for Christmas

Posted on

It’s nearly time for Christmas!

For lots of students, that means going back home to take a breather from assignments and spending some much-needed time with the family. It’s always a good idea to make sure you’re prepared so you don’t have to stress about anything when you should be taking it easy, so we’ve prepared some handy tips to make sure you’re ready for the Christmas Break.

Getting Organised

You might need to write some essays, do some reading, return some library books (sorry for that awful reminder!), talk to your landlord about a leaky tap, or send an important email… whatever it is, make a checklist of things you need to do before Christmas and get them done – you don’t want to be worrying about these things when you’re halfway through packing!

It might be a good idea to start thinking about buying presents, and whether you’re online or in the shops you should always keep an eye out for student bargains. You can pick up an NUS card and get all sorts of handy discounts – just click here to find out more.

Domestic Bliss

You don’t want to come back from Christmas and find your room a complete mess. Get your room tidy and organised now so you can pack without any stress and not have to worry about sorting everything out when you get back. If you’ve got any rubbish in your room or food in your fridge, make sure you throw it out so you don’t come home to any smelly surprises. You might even find that pen you lost the other week!

Turn off the heating (if you’re in control of it) and any electronic items at the plug. If you live with a group of students and the kitchen is a mess, don’t tackle it all by yourself – get Greg to do his damn dishes! Also, make sure you’ve locked all your windows and doors so your things are nice and secure, and don’t make a big show on social media about you leaving – people might be more likely to burgle you if they know you’re not in.

If you have any accommodation problems, HudLets is the place to go! Whether it’s an issue with your current accommodation or you’re looking to move somewhere else in Huddersfield, we’ll be happy to help. You can visit the HudLets office from 10:00am-4:00pm Monday to Friday, call 01484 473435 or email hudlets@ac.co.uk.

Rest, Relaxation & Revision

It might be tempting to use all of your time off to just kick back, relax and do nothing. You might be in for a shock though, when you get back and realise that those assignments are even closer, and you have a stack of reading you need to do.

Try and have a good balance between taking it easy and doing a bit of work so you’re not immediately having to deal with too much when you get back. That being said, don’t stress out too much about doing loads of work – this is a time to get your brain in order so you’re feeling refreshed when you get back to University.

Travel in Tranquility

If you’re travelling by train or bus, make sure to book your tickets as soon as you can. Booking in advance is always cheaper than booking last-minute, and if you’re getting the train you can use a 16-25 railcard to get a third off your ticket prices! When it comes to packing, make sure you don’t have too many bags to drag along. You can order presents to arrive there instead of dragging a load of presents along with you…

Before you set off, it’s a good idea to make sure you’ve got everything you need – make a list of essentials (clothes, phone charger, train tickets, etc.) and make sure you’ve got everything. Check this again when you’re leaving; you don’t want to leave anything behind!

So hopefully by now you should be looking forward to taking a relaxed and productive Christmas break. It’s always a good idea to plan things in advance so your Christmas can be as hassle-free as possible, so start planning while there’s still time.
